13th Annual Nolichucky River Cleanup & Celebration, June 21st

APE’s are hosting their 13th annual event on Saturday, June 21st, 2014.  Meet at U.S.A. Raft, 2 Jones Branch Rd, Erwin, TN starting at 11AM.  Participants will be assigned to teams plus provided with maps, trash bags and gloves. There are clean-up opportunities for both those with their own boats or rafts – and shore crews.  Be prepared with appropriate footwear, sunscreen, bug repellant, etc. Rafts, pickup trucks, and trailers will be helpful and much appreciated. Consider bringing a packed lunch, boating equipment, rain gear, chairs, family, and friends.  Showers and restrooms are available at the campground.  For cleanup participants, a free BBQ dinner from Texas Roadhouse of Johnson City will be served at 6PM with live music by the Chaz Spence Trio and prize drawings.  Bring a lawn chair, kick back with a cold tasty beverage, and know that you did something good for the river we all enjoy so much!

Swiftwater Rescue Course – June 27-29, 2014

Whitewater enthusiasts participate in hazardous activities in wilderness environments. Are you prepared to rescue yourself or your best paddling friend?  Are they prepared to rescue you?  Help in many cases may not be immediately available, and might be hours, not minutes away. Sign up and bring your favorite paddling crew to this clinic. It’s like buying yourself, and them, the safety line that may save your lives.

Beginner Whitewater Kayak Course – June 14-15

If you’ve ever thought how much fun it would be to learn how to kayak now’s your chance!! The Beginner Whitewater Kayak Course, sponsored by the Appalachian Paddling Enthusiasts (APEs) and the Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club, will be held June 14-15 in the Tri-Cities area. The clinic is designed for anyone wanting to learn the fundamentals of whitewater kayaking—fundamentals that will ensure a fun and safe time on the river. No previous experience is necessary. Instruction will consist of one day on flat water and one day on the river. As in the past, there will continue to be a strong emphasis on safety. Participants will be responsible for providing their own gear and transportation, although loaner gear is available on a first come basis.

F/B Hike: Little Stony Creek Falls, Sunday May 25

Rating: Moderate 5 mile round trip hike up and back along a cascading stream

Experience two picturesque waterfalls hidden in a forested gorge. The narrow trail follows the cascading stream with bridges provided for all crossings. Frequent stops expected to enjoy the beauty. Bring a towel to dry your feet, if you plan on briefly wading at the upper falls.

Departure time from Colonial Heights is 1pm Sunday. William Werner will swing by McDonalds/Ingle​s location to check if anyone is there. Otherwise, Food City in Weber City is the second rendezvous point to leave at 1:30pm to the trailhead near Dungannon, VA.

Wilderness First Aid Course – Saturday-Sunday, March 22-23

The Appalachian Paddling Enthusiasts and Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club are sponsoring a Wilderness First Aid course taught by Landmark Learning. The official registration form is obtained here. Course fee is $137. Check for the course fee is payable to Landmark Learning, but being collected by Scott Fisher. For current TEHCC members, a limited number of $50 scholarships are available (rebate upon successful completion). Contact a Steering Committee member to apply.

On Friday evening prior (March 21st), an optional CPR class is being offered for those wanting to become CPR certified/re-certified. This is a separate class and participation in one is not required to take the other. Cost is $45. To encourage the training, current TEHCC members can apply for $20 rebate scholarships to knock the price down to same as Red Cross. The same info packet is used.

Fun Fest 2013

TEHCC is sponsoring two FunFest events this year.

Tuesday, July 16 – Jay Erskine Leutz presents “Stand Up That Mountain: The Battle to Save One Small Community in the Wilderness Along the Appalachian Trail”  at 6:30pm, Kingsport Higher Education Center Auditorium (300 W. Market Street).  Jay will discuss the effort (as told in his book) about preserving Belview Mountain, a towering peak along the AT over in North Carolina, from destructive mining.

Thursday, July 18 – Moonlight Hike at Bays Mountain Park.  ****CANCELLED****  Park reports significant damage from yesterday’s cloudburst, thus decision was made at 3:30PM.

This popular event attracts 400-600 participants each year.  The hike traverses 2.5 miles around the lake on Lakeside and Holly Trails.  It kicks off at 8:00PM from the dam near the visitors center. Arrive early as parking has been an issue with shuttle buses now running from the Eastman lodge parking lot. Bring your own flashlight/head​lamp, water, and insect repellant. Hike ends with a headcount back at the visitors center by 10PM.

We need at least twelve volunteers to assist the Bays Mountain Park Association with this event.  The responsibilities are minimal – show up 30 minutes early (7:30 pm), stand at a trail junction with a flashlight or headlamp and help make sure nobody gets lost.  Contact Marc Schurger if interested, 423-229-5921.

Fall Dinner – Friday, November 8th

With the shorter days comes an opportunity to gather at the Eastman Lodge to trade stories with friends about your adventures.  Happy “Trails” Hour  begins at 5:30pm. Dinner is a Seafood Boil, which is a throwback to the 1970’s when seafood was the fare at many club dinners.

Our evening program “Tennessee’s Western Blue Ridge: America’s next great park?” outlines a concept.  The western rim of the Blue Ridge lies partially in northeastern Tennessee and includes spectacular wild places, such as the Roan Highlands, Unakas, Bald Mountains and Tennessee’s newest state park, Rocky Fork.  Informal discussions have begun among local citizens to have part of this region designated as a new national recreation area.  David Ramsey, a nationally recognized conservation photographer who was a leader in the effort to preserve the Rocky Fork area, will present images and information in support of this ambitious goal.

Mount LeConte Lodge (Smoky Mountains), Sat-Sun, July 13-14, 2013

For the several decades, TEHCC has organized a summer weekend trip to Mount LeConte Lodge in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This lodge (elevation 6593 ft) can only be reached by hiking trails. Even supplies are brought in by llama train once a week. The hiking distance to the lodge is 5.5 to 7.8 miles one-way depending on the route. The package price this year is $138.30 per person which includes supper on Saturday, lodging for the night, and breakfast on Sunday. We have four reservations in a five-person cabin (double bunk beds and a single). If you are interested in one or more of these reservations, please contact Steve Falling, 423-239-5502, for availability. You must be a TEHCC member to participate in this outing.
