On March 20, 1999, a series of bog bridges were installed on the A.T. on Cross Mountain, near Shady Valley, Tennessee. The new bridges replaced a set of old bog bridges that had deteriorated beyond repair. These bridges were constructed of 2″x4″ salt-treated lumber, bolted together to improve strength and durability. Sheets of wire netting were installed on the walking surface to improve traction and safety. The bridges should provide many years of safe hiking, and protection of the boggy area traversed by the bridges.
