Recently, a camper at the Iron Mountain Shelter on 7/6 received repeated harassment from a black bear. Stays at the shelter are not advised until further notice. Please consider other locations in your trip planning.

Description[edit]

Basic three-sided concrete-block/ metal roof shelter with open front and wooden sleeping platform.

Location[edit]

As the name implies, along the crest of Iron Mountain right by the AT along the section between Wilbur Dam Rd and TN91.

Water[edit]

Water available 0.2 mile south of the shelter.

Maintenance History[edit]

  • Oct 2017: Installed framing under sleeping platform then covered with hardware cloth.
  • 1992: Caulked around nails and under ridge cap.
  • Oct 1991: Replaced rafters and laths, and installed new corrugated galvanized steel roof on front, and new heavy duty corrugated galvanized steel roof on back. Painted entire shelter. A picnic table was installed.
  • 1960: Built by US Forest Service.
