Trail Overview[edit]

Located in Grayson Highlands State Park. Favorite location to see the wild ponies or pick huckleberries in August-early September.

How to get there[edit]

Driving direction are given on the Grayson Highlands State Park page. Park in Massie Gap lot. Trailhead gate is seen across the open field.

Route Description[edit]

Cross the open field to reach the trailhead at the horse gate. The blue-blazed Rhododendron Trail heads uphill along a curved path. The gravel road at 0.8 mile is the Virginia Highlands horse trail. The trail ends are rough 1 mile upon reaching the white-blazed Appalachian Trail.

Typical Conditions[edit]

Heavily used and worn trail. Has been relocated over the years to reduce the rate of ascent. Can be very busy during nice weekends when the berries are in season.

Fees, Permits, etc.[edit]

Daily parking fee for passenger vehicles into VA state parks is $2 weekdays, $3 weekends.
