Trail Overview[edit]

Josiah Trail ascends the north slope of Holston Mountain connecting Big Creek Road near South Holston Lake to the Holston Mountain Trail. The first mile or so has a gentle grade with level places to camp. The steeper, upper trail gives sweeping views of South Holston Lake. To extended the hike, take a right or left on Holston Mountain Trail and following the crest of the mountain for a ways.

Enjoy the profuse mountain laurel flanking the lower trail. Closer to the top, rhododendron dominates as you leave the more recently logged lower section for mature forest. At about 1.6 miles is an impressive rock pyramid. Just a few hundred feet after taking a right at the Josiah/Holston Mt Trail junction, there is a field covered (in late spring) with Lily of the Valley.

How to get there[edit]

From Bristol, TN:

  1. Head east on State Street.
  2. Turn right onto Pennsylvania Av (hwy 421).
  3. Follow 421 for about 15 miles.
  4. Turn right onto Camp Tom Howard Road (the sign says Little Oak Campground).
  5. After about 7 miles, take the left fork onto Big Creek Road.
  6. After about a mile, find the trailhead on the left.
  7. Parking is on the right just before the trailhead.

Note: Parking for 3 cars. Before getting to the trail is a gated Forest Service road on the left. It sits back from the road and is a little hard to see. The trail is not marked but it sees enough use to be easily recognizable as a trail. The trail is beside the main road just beyond the gated road also on the left.
