SUMMARY:The Channels Natural Area Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Tim Schaefer\, 423-302-0846\nRating: Moderate 6-mile ro
und-trip hike with 1\,100' elevation gain.\nThe Great Channels are an unus
ual geological maze of large crevices in a sandstone bed.  The formation
is up on a ridgeline\, thus also great views. The three mile path is part
of the  Brumley Mountain Trail - starting out as wide forest service road
and then narrowing to a hiking trail. We’ll enjoy exploring the channe
ls and lunch before returning to the cars.  Departure time is 8AM from Co
lonial Heights (to avoid parking congestion at the trail head as much as p
ossible). The 56 mile drive to Hayters Gap will take 75-90 minutes north o
n I-81 and then winding up the mountain. Expected return time is late afte
rnoon. For further information\, check the trail wiki or call/e-mail the h
ike leader.  Courtesy replies are appreciated so we know to look for you
. We can meet at either Ingles in Colonial Heights or at the parking locat
ion. Note that parking is limited at the trail head. Most importantly\, do
  not block the trail gate for car access.\n&nbsp\;

DESCRIPTION:Leader: Andy Steffan\, 919-928-4738\n\nRating: Moderate 3.6-mil

he way as you reach the highest elevation in the middle of the hike. The f
alls are best after a good rainfall\, so let’s hope we get some solid ra
in beforehand\, unlike what we’ve experienced recently. The trail follow
s the A.T. for about 1.7 miles\, then a ~1 mile stint on Coon Den Falls Tr
ail. To return\, it’s ~1 mile on the Coon Den Falls Trail and road-side
back to the parking lot.  Sturdy footwear is recommended.\n\nLet’s leav

rive towards Hampton. Please let the hike leader know of your interest in
carpooling and potential pick-up points\, if on the way. Otherwise\, meet

DESCRIPTION:Leader: Vic Hasler\, 423-239-0388\n\nRating: Medium 5-mile roun
d-trip hike with 1400’ climb\n\nThis hike is rescheduled from June 8th.
Predicted heavy thunderstorms for June 8th materialized by afternoon. Hiki
ng on a wet trail is not good due to the risk of slips and falls for indiv
iduals - and significant erosion for the tread. Let’s hope for better we
ather in August.\n\nThe historic firetower was restored last year\, with p
artial funding from the TN A.T. license plate program\, allowing continued
enjoyment of the great views. This hike travels the Appalachian Trail up
and back from Tanyard Gap with a fair amount of elevation gain.\n\nLet’s
leave from Colonial Heights (now Ingles parking area) at 8 am for the rou
ghly 1½ hour drive towards Hot Springs. Please let the hike leader know o
f your interest as stops in Greeneville or Johnson City to carpool can det
ermine our route. Otherwise meet in the parking area at Tanyard Gap (US25/
70 overpass) by 9:30 am. We’ll hike north-bound on the Appalachian Trail
at a steady pace until the firetower is reached. Sturdy footwear and hiki
ng poles are recommended. Pack a lunch/snack plus plenty of water to stay
hydrated. Plan to be back at the vehicles before the afternoon heat arrive
s\, thus back home by mid-to-late afternoon (possible an ice cream stop).

SUMMARY:Channels Trail
DESCRIPTION:I explored this trail in early August as the alternative route
to popular The Channels Natural Area Preserve which allowed creation of th
e trail wiki page (http://tehcc.org/wiki/Channels_Trail).  Intent is to r
eturn to allow others to experience this option versus the ridgetop path\,
potentially with some light trail maintenance.  An early start from Colo
nial Heights is desired since a good hour drive to bottom of the mountain
and then up a couple of miles on the gravel forest road to reach the prefe
rred trailhead.  The group pace will be slower pausing to paint some of t
he red blazes as agreed with the state forest ranger.  Goal is to have a
late lunch up at the Hayter Gap firetower area with its views.  Once folk
s have finished enjoying the maze of channels\, we’ll head back at a fas
ter pace.  Estimated return time to Colonial Heights is between 4-5pm.
Please call/e-mail the hike leader to know headcount for transportation o

SUMMARY:A.T. VISTA: Koonford Bridge Hike and Shook Branch Rec. Area Picnic
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Appalachian Trail VISTA program will consist a set of
hikes along the A.T. and nearby trails with photos and videos posted that
evening followed by a montage released in October 2021.  To keep this eve
nt easy/family friendly and examine an excellent feat of wilderness constr
uction\, I chose to lead a recommended walk from the Dennis Cove trailhead
to Koonford Bridge (as featured in March 2021 club newsletter) and back.
The path is a level rails-to-trail conversion except for the last short
section down to the stream and bridge.  This hike will not visit Laurel F
alls with its many rock steps from this direction.\n\nAfter the hike\, we
can relocate the group to Shook Branch Recreation Area on Watauga Lake to
enjoy the picnic lunch everyone brings for themselves.  (Park has bathroo
ms.)  We can also check out one of the club’s newest bridges constructe
d nearby.\n\nThe caravan will leave Colonial Heights Ingles parking lot by
9am to arrive at the trailhead parking area around 10am.  (Alternatively
\, just meet there but let us know you’re coming!)  The hike will be ro
ughly hour and half including time to possibly toss rocks into the stream.
The picnic area is 15 minutes away from the trailhead\, and then we’l
l stay as long as the group decides.   Please call/text/e-mail the hike
leader to know headcount or if last-minute changes.

SUMMARY:Woody Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this hike\, rated as one of the most difficult hike
