Carvers Gap to Grassy Ridge Hike, Sunday, June 10, 2012
Leader: Steve Perri
This hike from Carvers Gap to Grassy Ridge is an easy-to-moderate hike, taking advantage of the warmer season we’ve had this year for a moderate family hike. The drive is a little farther than most of our Sunday hikes, but the destination is worth the extra time and distance. Round trip, the hike is a little over 4 miles depending on how much we choose to hike around on Grassy Ridge. The peak bloom for the rhododendrons is usually the third week in June, but they might be early this year. The club has been conducting gravel reinforcement in the area and the segment between Carvers Gap and Round Bald will be completed in July. We’ll meet in Colonial Heights at 12:00 pm between McDonalds and the bank in front of Ingles for an afternoon outing.

Friday Hikers: Carvers Gap to Grassy Ridge, June 17, 2011
Collins Chew reporting
We had ideal weather for our 4.8-mile hike from Carvers Gap to Grassy Ridge and return and then another 0.5 mile (about) hike through the Rhododendron Gardens. Along the AT, the rhododendrons were upstaged by a nearly continuous, beautiful display of flame azalea with many colors showing. The rhododendrons were also very nice, particularly near the top of Grassy Ridge and in the Gardens. There were many other wildflowers, including American Mountain Ash, Grays Lily, bluets, ragwort, and more.

Hike Notice: A.T. Moonlight Hike - Carvers Gap to Grassy Ridge, September 1, 2001
Leader: Richard Colberg
Rating: Moderate (5 miles)
Saturday, September 1 is the day before a full moon, and hopefully will offer clear weather. (Yes, I know September 1 is Labor Day weekend, but this was the best weekend this Fall to have a full moon close to a Saturday.) We plan to hike from Carvers Gap, enjoy the sunset and moonrise (about 7:45 PM) from the top of Grassy Ridge, and hike back in the dark. We'll meet in the parking lot between McDonalds and State of Franklin Bank in Colonial Heights at 4:00 PM, for a 4:15 PM departure. Bring appropriate clothing (it could be cool and windy after dark), flashlight, batteries, water and snacks (e.g., hot chocolate). Good footwear (e.g., boots) is recommended since the trail is rocky and we'll be hiking after dark. This hike is weather dependent since we can't see the moon in overcast (or rainy) weather. Call hike leader for details.

Hike Notice: Grassy Ridge, Saturday, October 4, 1997
Leader: Steve Wilson
This should be a nice hike from Carvers Gap over the Roan Mountain balds to Grassy Ridge and back. With good weather, the views will be impressive.
