Trail Overview

Connector between Beartree Campground and Iron Mountain Trail.

How to get there

From Kingsport, TN

  1. North on I-81 into Virginia.
  2. Take Exit 19 (Abingdon) and turn right/east onto US-58.
  3. Go 12 miles to Damascus.
  4. Continue through town on US-58 and travel another 7 miles to the campground entrance on the left.
  5. Park for free in fisherman’s lot to right – three miles to trailhead, so good for those biking.
  6. Otherwise, pay campground entrance fee and continue to Chipmunk Circle campground area and park by the bath house.

Route Description

The Lum Trail, blazed with yellow diamonds, starts in the Beartree Campground near the bath house on Chipmunk Circle. At just under half mile, the trail will begin to climb the mountainside with a steep haul towards the end. The trail finishes near the Straight Branch shelter at intersection with Iron Mountain Trail. The IMT heads south to Shaw Gap and north to VA-600 (Whitetop Road).

Narrow single wide path up along the stream valley.

Main gate is open 7 AM-10 PM during April 15 through October 31 with $5 day use fee per vehicle. Beartree campground reopens Thursday May 24, 2012.
