| style="color:#000;" | <div style="padding:2px 5px">[[File:Rogers Ridge Balds View 2.jpg|right|thumb|300px|Rogers Ridge Balds View]][[Rogers Ridge Horse Trail]] is an in-and-out 6.87-mile ridgeline trail. It's a long hill climb trail for a day hike, but near the end, the 360° views of the surrounding ridgelines make it all worthwhile. A side benefit of this hike is being able to reach the Tri-State Corner Knob junction of TN-NC-VA. The trail begins in the Horse Ridge Scenic Area of the Cherokee National Forest past Damascus near Laurel Bloomery, TN. Horses are allowed, but on a recent October 2015 trip, there was little evidence of them. Although clearly marked at the trail head that ATV/ORV vehicles were not allowed, signs of their recent presence were along the entire trail.

The hike begins with an immediate creek crossing that has neither a bridge nor decent rocks to hop across; but this will be the last time you see water. Although guide books mention some campsites along the way with water access, we didn't see them. The trail wastes no time getting to the 3,201 feet of climbing, as it's nearly a consistent slope up to the summit. The trail itself is very well marked with yellow rectangle blazes, but several unmarked and well worn trails connect along the way. It may be that one of them connects to the [[Gentry Creek Falls]] trail that would make for a nice loop trail. The trail itself is wide with a clear "two-track" appearance and the occasional water-logged rut to walk around. While not noticed on the ascent, the descent can be challenging for the ankles, as there are several sections of loose rocks, fist-sized and smaller.

After hiking for 5.33 miles with glimpses through the trees of mountains and neighboring ridgelines, you finally enter a clearing to enjoy the views. The trail may "officially" end here as the previously well-blazed path now lacks markings, but you can continue on to enjoy the views. From here you can take a side trip to the south to get an early view of the surrounding ridgelines and valley including Grandfather Mountain. Continuing on the trail to the north, you reach another bald clearing that would be suitable for camping, especially for large groups. The only reservation I myself have about camping here is the apparent frequent use of ORVs here. From this higher elevation, there are views of Whitetop Mountain and Mt Rogers Mountain to the northeast. Throughout these bald clearings, blackberry bushes appear to be growing rampant. If you can tolerate the thorns, the blackberry picking in the summer must be unlimited!

In a bald clearing to the east towards the state line is the trail high point in the final bald clearing. Although various sources differ on the exact elevation, we measured by GPS at 4,900 feet. The ridgetop home seen to the south appears to have been severely vandalized. Although unfortunate for the owner, one can only hope that one day this majestic ridgeline and profile can be returned to its original natural glory. After the high point, the trail begins to descend for the first time, and ends at a trail/road. Turn left to continue the descent to find the Tri-State Corner Knob, the terminus (at least at one time) of this trail.

When visited in October of 2015, the hike was an enjoyable day of near complete solitude. The only encounter was a couple in a truck near the trail terminus. Unexpectedly we found the trees to be in the early stages of changing colors to the south and west, and found only bare trees to the north and east. Regardless, the day of fresh air, views, and exercise was more than enough to make this a great trail to visit, that you should consider as well.

== Park Lodging ==

Park offers RV sites, tent only sites as well as cabins. Sites fill up quickly on most summer weekends. It is ill advised to arrive without a reservation in the summer.

Camp store sells wood, ice, and some very basic other sundries. The main RV area is blanketed with Wi-Fi but when visiting in Summer of 2015, couldn't be accessed. Several bathhouses are spread around the site and include flushing toilets and hot showers. A dump station for RV's is also available near the camp check-in station.

From Kingsport, TN
#Take Fort Henry Drive to left at traffic light onto Hemlock Rd.
#Make the hard left right in front of Warriors Path Park entrance to follow the road onto Fall Creek Rd.
#Cross the bridge over Patrick Henry Lake.
#Park at the first pull-off on the right at the golf cart crossing. (Space for 4-6 vehicles - leave gap for golf carts)
#Trail begins on the back corner of #17 tee crossing the small bridge with trail sign.

== Route Description==

Blue blazed park trail. Almost all of the 300 ft elevation gain happens in the first half mile of the trail as you head straight up the ridge. There are two overlooks as you go. One at #5 tee box on the golf course, a good turn around point for families and those not interested in the rest of the climb. The Rocky Point Overlook (the trail high point on the ridge) is another 0.35 miles past the #5 tee. After the ascent the trail drops back to lake level and is steeper than the initial ascent, something to remember for a return trip.

The Devil's Backbone Trail intersects with the [[Trail connects to::Fall Creek Loop|Fall Creek Loop Trail]] for a nice {{#show: Fall Creek Loop | ?Trail Distance#mile}} walk around old pasture lands past several old home sites through gentler hills.

== Typical Conditions ==

While the park keeps the trails fairly clear of blowdowns, the trend is rutted and washed out on steep inclines. The path through lowlands by the creek can get muddy after a rain or flood in the spring deluges.

Former road to the Childress Family Ferry across Holston River.

Several tales surround this trail. Tales of a little girl with an aching tooth crossed this path to reach a dentist within the current day golf course. Another tale of two boys stealing dynamite from the nearby dam construction. After a successful day of dynamite fishing the boys bring home their haul to excited parents. The parents take the fish and leave for town to sell the catch, the boys accidentally catch the dynamite on fire near the fireplace destroying the home.

The TEHCC is proud to maintain roughly 133 miles of the Appalachian Trail. The southern terminus of the TEHCC’s section is Spivey Gap, NC where the AT crosses US 19W after descending from High Rocks and Big Bald. From there, the Trail makes its way through the Unaka Mountains and the Roan Highlands. After descending from the Roan Highlands and meandering through the Laurel Fork Gorge, the Trail crosses Watauga Dam and follows the crest of Iron Mountain to Osborne Farm. Upon leaving the meadows of Osborne Farm, the Trail follows the ridge lines to the TN/VA state border where the TEHCC’s section ends (officially as of Spring 2013). Use the map below to explore the TEHCC’s section of the Appalachian Trail. You can also explore each section's individual page by using the table at the bottom of the page:

Probably counter-intuitively to get this site going in 2011 we began by focusing on the non-AT trails in the region. We felt that the information on the AT in this area is well documented on websites, books, and maps everywhere. Less well known are the other local trails. This information started with what was on the club's old website, but now is starting to evolve with the wiki use.

If your goal is just Wahoo, the quickest way is to begin on Lake Road until you see the sign for Darwin's Revenge to the left. This is the Darwin's Connector and is a wide path, possibly on old road that tee's up to Darwin's Revenge. Turn to the right and take the trail until you see the sign for Wahoo.

== Typical Conditions ==

The mountain biking association [http://ntmba.org/ SORBA Tri-Cities] handles the trail maintenance, thus generally in good condition. While there are no blazes to guide you through the forest, the narrow single tracks are well established. Grab a trail map at the parking lot kiosk to help you decipher intersections; some which could use signs. Be aware for approaching bike riders who can come up quickly on your group. Step aside to let them safely pass.

Park offers RV sites, tent only sites as well as cabins. Sites fill up quickly on most summer weekends. It is ill advised to arrive without a reservation in the summer.

Camp store sells wood, ice, and some very basic other sundries. The main RV area is blanketed with Wi-Fi but when visiting in Summer of 2015, couldn't be accessed. Several bathhouses are spread around the site and include hot showers. A dump station for RV's is also available near the camp check-in station.

== Trail Overview ==

The longest trail within the [[Roan Mountain State Park]] trail system. It largely follows 143 (including all of its road noise) connecting the Visitor Center with the Conference Center, Cabins, and Campground. The {{#show: Raven Rock | ?Trail distance round trip }} hike of Raven Rock is accessed from this trail.

The northern trail head begins across the street from the Visitor Center marked as part of the Boundary Trail System.

Trail begins at the Visitor Center and heads south then west until turning south again to cross 143. Afterwards it continues south behind the cabins, and ranger residence until it terminates at the Campground entrance on 143.

Chestnut Ridge Trail is the highest and steepest and therefore most challenging trail of the [[Roan Mountain State Park]] trail system. Offering the most remote and secluded hike within the park. Leave the Miller homestead imagining it's 100 years ago and you're a family member headed to town for some supplies. If you want to get away and not hear cars roaring by for a while, hike this trail. It's recommended to get shuttled or car pool to Miller Homestead parking lot to avoid the very long and steep ascent to return. Hike down to Forest Road Trail and continue to either the Visitor center to the left or head right and make your way back to the cabins or campground.

== Typical Conditions ==

A classic Appalachian hiking trail. You're up on a ridge, but the trees obscure 90% of the view to the surrounding mountains. A winter hike after the leaves have fallen would likely offer wonderful views.

The typical foliage up top is mostly deciduous trees with a few pines. The middle layer is classic Roan Mountain rhododendron, and the ground cover seems to be predominated with ferns.

The trail is decently maintained and likely doesn't see much traffic. It's a fairly narrow trail in parts and the steep descent is lacking steps in most places. A hike up the ridge is likely very challenging.

The trail is apparently a self-guided hike as there are several numbered stations throughout but no handouts were available at the trail head. == Trail Overview ==

The longest trail within the [[Roan Mountain State Park]] trail system. It largely follows 143 (including all of its road noise) connecting the Visitor Center with the Conference Center, Cabins, and Campground. The {{#show: Raven Rock | ?Trail distance round trip }} hike of Raven Rock is accessed from this trail.

== How to get there ==

The northern trail head begins across the street from the Visitor Center marked as part of the Boundary Trail System.

== Route Description==

Trail begins at the Visitor Center and heads south then west until turning south again to cross 143. Afterwards it continues south behind the cabins, and ranger residence until it terminates at the Campground entrance on 143.

== Typical Conditions ==

The northern section can be very rocky and rugged at parts. Trail is well blazed and most trail splits are clearly marked or a trail blaze can be seen down the proper trail to take.
