== How to get there ==

From I-26 in Tennessee at Exit 46:
#From the Exit 46 Welcome Center follow the access road back under the interstate about 0.2 miles to its end into Clear Branch Road (street sign is often missing).
#If heading east on I-26 and not wishing to stop at the Welcome Center, simply turn right off the Exit 46 ramp and follow the access road a few hundred yards down to Clear Branch Rd. (west-bound traffic will turn left from the exit ramp onto the welcome ctr. access road)
#Turn right onto Clear Branch and head down thru the tiny community of Clear Branch, past the Clear Branch Church, and down the steep grade to the stop sign - about 0.8 mile.
#Turn left onto TN-352 (old US 23 - usually no sign here either) and go about 2.5 miles to Rocky Fork Road on your right.
#Follow RF Rd. about 0.8 mile up to the parking area at the blue gate on your left. The stream along Rocky Fork Road is very scenic, with lots of cascades, deep pools and giant boulders. Great trout fishing too.
#Park in the new large gravel parking area. The Whitehouse Cliffs Trail starts by the campfire area.

A new trail starting from the parking area was built in 2018-2019 and opened to the public on December 28th 2019. A tremendous amount of volunteer hours was put it to make the new trail.

Located at the Main Parking Lot near Campfire Interpretation Area. New Whitehouse Cliffs Trail route is completely new and is the REQUIRED, marked route to reach Whitehouse Cliffs Knob overlook.

== Trail Overview ==

The volcano-appearing summit south of Kingsport is the 3,094 ft highpoint of Hawkins County. Great views of the I-81 valley and overlooking [[Bays Mountain Park]] to the southwest. Former airport beacon and short firetower also remain on the summit.

== How to get there ==

From Kingsport downtown:
#Take Highway TN93 south.
#Roughly six miles out, turn right onto Horton Highway.
#Turn right at Chimney Top Loop (actually, the second right is shorter).
#After half mile, turn left onto gravel Sugar Hollow Lane.
#Proceed uphill past and seemingly through yards to Faulkner’s home.
#Park down below the house.
Trailhead is behind the right front corner of their garage down the narrow steep path to an old logging road.

From Johnson City:
#Take I-26 north to I-81 south.
#After six miles, take Exit 50 (Jonesborough/Fall Branch) for Highway TN93.
#Left at bottom of ramp and under I-81 overpass.
#Quickly, a right onto Jearoldstown Road.
#After a couple of miles, turn right at Moody Road and then again onto Ryan Road.
#Take left onto Horton Highway.
Follow remaining directions from Step #3 above.

== Route Description==

From the Faulkner's homestead, the trail winds up ridges along former logging roads until it shoots up along the rocky spine. Be careful and take plenty of breaks to enjoy the view (and catch your breath). Also you can use the alternative (green) but rougher route to the summit to make a small loop out of it.

== Typical Conditions ==

For the first mile, the route is a steep bulldozed logging road or cleared ATV section. During or immediately after heavy rains, this section would have a stream flowing down it or slippery mud in places. The upper section is a steep path winding through leaf covered rocks. The path is marked with pink and orange ribbons. Ropes assist the final climb up the cliffs. Up on top of the ridge, the worn path is covered with pine needles.

'''Update per Nov 2019 hike''' First hike here since the fires of 2016. There are now lots of burnt blowdowns along the top ridge that really slow your progress. For some of them, you have to get really close to the cliff edge to get around them and that’s a bit treacherous at times. The fire damage along the eastern part of the ridge seems to be worse than the western side. There are parts of the trail on the east side that is pretty much unrecognizable if you’ve been here before.

The western “Fire Tower Road” final approach along the cliffs with the steep gully is especially dangerous now with all the burnt blowdowns. I would not recommend that route unless you’re a highly experienced hiker. Fortunately the eastern Faulkner property approach is still in good condition. The ropes and blazes on the final climb to the ridgeline survived the fires. Also the old fire tower on the summit survived as well.

On a positive note, the fires and blowdowns opened up several new views both north and south that did not exist before but I would use extreme caution if you attempt this hike.

This trail route is accessed through the property of Mary and Danes Faulkner, thus need to contact for permission.

Nothing at I-81 Exit 50, so you'll have to head to an area town for refreshment.

There is another route to Chimney Top from the NW side, which is also on private property.
 The Great Smoky Mountains National Park also has a Chimney Tops Trail (note plural) that is well known in the region. [http://www.gsmnp.com/pages/chimney_tops.html link]
The property owner stated that rattlesnakes are common in the summer, which would have many rocks on the upper section to hide between. Colder weather may be a better time to enjoy this high. Mid-April just has some wildflowers beginning to bloom.

== Park Overview ==

Buffalo Mountain Park, created in 1994, is 725 acres located on the north slope of Buffalo Mountain, thus the trails are steep and forested. Bring binoculars as the views of Johnson City and the region are the drawing card for this park.

== How to get there ==

From Johnson City, TN
#From just past the intersection of Cherokee Road (TN 67) and University Parkway (US 321) on Cherokee Road, turn onto Buffalo Road through Pine Oaks golf course.
#Take the first right onto Rolling Hills Drive.
#When Rolling Hills Drive ends, turn right onto Highridge Road.
#Drive to end of road.
#The main parking/picnic area is a sharp right following the paved road, while the gravel road to the left head to an alternate trailhead at Hartsell Hollow.

This is the primary trailhead location. GPS address: 5070 Highridge Road, Johnson City, TN 37601

The park can also be entered from the [[Lone Oak Trail]] on Dry Creek Road.

# 3.6 mile: To Tip-Top and back: [[Cascade Trail]], [[Fork Ridge Trail]], and [[High Ridge Trail]]

The following: [[Cascade Trail]], [[Fork Knob Trail]], [[High Ridge Trail]], and [[Lone Oak Trail]] were impacted by the wildfire back in May 2008 - affecting primarily the western side of the park. More open views are available, but also dead rhododendron and trees.

Park does not offer any premise lodging.

There is no fee for Buffalo Mountain Park. The main gate is open 7AM to sunset during the summer (Mar-Oct) and 9AM to sunset in the winter (Nov-Feb). Picnic area is currently closed (for the winter?). Dogs are allowed on leash. Per sign at park, no alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, or firearms.

Mountain biking at Buffalo Mountain is likely referring to the ATV trails to Pinnacle Mountain firetower which is located off Dry Creek Road. Mountain biking in this park is only allowed on the steep service road up to the towers.

Having a map is important as the rudimentary trail signs (BSA Eagle projects in past) only direct towards major locations (Tip-Top, Hartsell Hollow, Cascade, etc.) - and do not identify the trail names. Blazing on the trails varies in frequency and effectiveness. White blazes are for the main loop trails. Blue blazes for the major alternative trails and a few access points. Orange blaze is the Lone Oak Trail. Red blazes can be seen on some now discontinued trails and short connectors - and also the park's south boundary with the national forest. To describe some of the routes, this trail wiki will attempt to define what it believes are the trail sections.

== How to get there ==


From I-26 in Tennessee at Exit 46:
#From the Exit 46 Welcome Center follow the access road back under the interstate about 0.2 miles to its end into Clear Branch Road (street sign is often missing).
#If heading east on I-26 and not wishing to stop at the Welcome Center, simply turn right off the Exit 46 ramp and follow the access road a few hundred yards down to Clear Branch Rd. (west-bound traffic will turn left from the exit ramp onto the welcome ctr. access road)
#Turn right onto Clear Branch and head down thru the tiny community of Clear Branch, past the Clear Branch Church, and down the steep grade to the stop sign - about 0.8 mile.
#Turn left onto TN-352 (old US 23 - usually no sign here either) and go about 2.5 miles to Rocky Fork Road on your right.
#Follow RF Rd. about 0.8 mile up to the parking area at the blue gate on your left. The stream along Rocky Fork Road is very scenic, with lots of cascades, deep pools and giant boulders. Great trout fishing too.
#Park in the small area on the right of the short gravel road leading to the gate. Try to leave room for other vehicles if possible.

Alternative routes: Take I-26, Exit 43 (Temple Hill), then right onto Hwy. 352 South to Rocky Fork Rd. on right; or I-26, Exit 50 (Flag Pond) and left onto Higgins Creek Rd. to Flag Pond Rd. (often not signed), then right on Flag Pond Rd. to Rocky Fork Rd. on left

== McQueen's Knob and McQueen's Knob Shelter ==

[[Backbone Rock Trail]] is located 4.6 miles south of Damascus. It offers a 2.3 mile blue blaze trail on a narrow ridge from the AT to Backbone Rock Recreation Area which has camping and picnic facilities at a prominent rock wall which TN133 tunnels through just south of Damascus.

== Tennessee/Virginia State Line ==

The "Welcome to Mount Rogers National Recreation Area" signifies entry into Virginia. It is a popular photo spot after the long ridge walk along Cross and Holston Mountains. As of Spring 2013, the TN/VA state line is now the official northern boundary of TEHCC-sponsored section of the Appalachian Trail. [http://mratc.pbworks.com/ Mount Rogers Appalachian Trail Club] sponsors the Trail from this point north through Damascus and the Grayson Highlands.

== TN91 ==

Located at the ridge crest of Cross Mountain between Stoney Creek and Shady Valley at Osborne Farm. There are two parking areas at the highway - space for three vehicles on north side (designated handicap) and 10-12 on the south by the Cherokee National Forest information display.

== Osborne Farm ==

Osborne Farm tract was acquired by the ATC and Cherokee National Forest in 2001 for the protection of the AT. A 0.5 mile section is built to accessible standards through beautiful pasture with views of Shady Valley and Mt. Rogers area. Easy hike to end of field is slightly less than a mile before entering the woods going towards Double Springs Shelter.

== Double Springs Shelter ==

[[Shelter:Double Springs|Double Springs Shelter]] (4060') is a concrete block shelter built by the United States Forest Service in 1960. It is located at the junction of Holston and Cross Mountains.

== Holston Mountain Trail ==

This is the last access point to the Trail before the long ridge walk along Iron Mountain. It can be reached from Stoney Creek via TN91 or from Elizabethton via Siam. The road is gated during the winter approximately 2 miles from the Trail.

== Vandeventer Shelter ==

[[Shelter:Vandeventer|Vandeventer Shelter]] (3510') is a concrete block shelter built by the United States Forest Service in 1961. It is located within the Big Laurel Branch Wilderness. Nearby are tremendous views of Watauga Lake.

== Iron Mountain Shelter ==

[[Shelter:Iron Mountain|Iron Mountain Shelter]] (4125') is a concrete block shelter built the United States Forest Service in 1960.

== Uncle Nick Grindstaff Monument ==

This monument is the gravesite of hermit Nick Grindstaff (b. Dec 26, 1851, d. July 22, 1923). He lived a remote existence on Iron Mountain after being robbed and beaten out west. The chimney-like monument was constructed out of the remains of his cabin. Local folklore tell that when locals tried to carry out the body of Nick, his dog was so protective that they had to overpower it. It was later laid to rest with Nick. Past hikers who have camped at the site have claimed to hear the haunting howls of the dog in the night.

== Iron Mountain Trail ==

The [[Iron Mountain Trail - South|Iron Mountain Trail]] does not intersect with the AT, but can be reached by continuing east on Cross Mountain Road from the TN91 trailhead. The IMT runs along the eastern rim of Shady Valley into Damascus.

== TN91 ==

== Special Notice ==

The National Forest Service lands are closed to most recreation from north of Shook Branch to a half mile north of Wilbur Dam Rd. Bears are active in this area. Individuals are only permitted to hike through this area. Please continue hiking through this area without stopping. Watauga Lake Shelter is closed. No preparation or consumption of food or overnight stays allowed. This closure is effective until December 1, 2015.

== Dennis Cove ==

Road crossing at Dennis Cove and first of two access points to Hampton, TN. Dennis Cove has tent sites within walking distance of the Trail. It is the southern entrance to the Pond Mountain Wilderness and Laurel Fork Gorge.

== Koonford Bridge ==

One of the TEHCC's most notable accomplishments, the Koonford Bridges spans Laurel Fork Creek just below a high rock wall with a number of cascades further down stream. It has received national attention and awards for it's primitive construction techniques in compliance with wilderness area restrictions.

== High Water Bypass Trail ==

The High Water Bypass blue blaze trail is a .5 mile continuation of an old railroad grade from the AT before it descends into the Laurel Fork Gorge to the Laurel Fork Shelter. This route offers a bypass of the AT in the gorge when the area becomes flooded. It also offers a more gradual grade from the south and a small loop.

== Laurel Fork Falls ==

One of the most dramatic falls in the entire Appalachian mountain range, the falls a great place for fly fishing and picnicking. Swimming is not allowed because of the dangerous undertow in the pool.

== Laurel Fork Shelter ==

[[Shelter:Laurel Fork|Laurel Fork Shelter]] (2450') is a stone shelter built in 1966 by the TEHCC. It is located 300' above the AT on the blue blazed bypass trail after leaving Laurel Fork Gorge.

== Hampton Blue Blaze Trail ==

The Hampton blue blaze trail, a former AT route, is a mile long stretch of trail connecting the townships of Hampton & Braemar to the AT following an old railroad grade along Laurel Fork Creek. The trail also provides a high water route if portions of the creek side are flooded. Some of the notable features are the rocky cliffs along the creek. This route is often used by day hikers to access Laurel Fork Falls.

== Pond Flats ==

Pond Flats (3500') is situated near the peak of Pond MOuntain in the Pond Mountain Wilderness. It hosts a rare, high elevation, naturally forming pond. It is only seen during wet seasons. There is a primitive campsite and water source here as well.

== US321 - Hampton, TN and Butler, TN ==

This is the second and primary access point to Hampton, TN. The US321 crossing at Watauga Lake is at the Shook Branch Recreation Area. Hikers should be cautious when crossing this busy highway. There is a small parking area at the Cherokee National Forest sign.

== Watauga Lake Shelter ==

[[Shelter:Watauga Lake|Watauga Lake Shelter]] (2091') is a wooden shelter built by the United States Forest Service in 1980. it is located uphill from the AT on a blue blaze.

== Watauga Dam ==

Watauga Dam is a 320' earthen dam built by the TVA. It holds back the Watauga River to form Watauga Lake. Access across the dam is for hiking purposes only. The Trail follows a portion of an access road that is closed to the public.

== Wilbur Dam Road ==

After descending from the Roan Highlands, the Trail reaches US19E (2880'). A few miles west is the town of Roan Mountain, TN where lodging, food and shuttling can be found. To the east is Elk Park, NC where lodging and food can be found. Parking is NOT recommended here.

== Bishop Hollow ==

Open area leading from Bear Branch towards Buck Mountain Road. Many apple trees can be found along the Trail.

== Mountaineer Falls and Mountaineer Falls Shelter ==

Mountaineer Falls is a small cascade just down hill from the [[Shelter:Mountaineer Falls|Mountaineer Falls Shelter]] (3200'). The shelter was built during the 2006 edition of Hard Core. It has two primary sleeping platforms and a third over the picnic area. The shelter is also home to a resident bear - a carved log with unknown origins. Water is down hill front of the shelter.

Crossing of Laurel Fork's headwaters long before the Laurel Fork Gorge. Primitive campsite along the creek.

== Moreland Gap Shelter ==

[[Shelter:Moreland Gap|Moreland Gap Shelter]] (3815') is a concrete block shelter built by the United States Forest Service located just south of White Rocks Mountain.

== Coon Den Falls Trail ==

Coon Den Falls is a 1.3 mile blue blaze trail that can be accessed from Dennis Cove Road. This former AT route was rerouted due to it's steepness and rock scrambling. However, it provides the waterfall enthusiast a loop hike from the AT to a 50 foot waterfall off a steep, rocky cliff.

== Carvers Gap ==

Carvers Gap (5512') is the primary road access for the Roan Highlands. TN143 comes from Roan Mountain, TN and NC261 comes from Bakersville, NC. Large parking area with restrooms. The road to the top of Roan Mountain is open from approximately May-October.

== Round Bald ==

Round Bald (5826') is one of the many famous balds of the Roan Highlands. Round Bald has 360 degree views from its summit. Round Bald is also home to one of the TEHCC's greatest trail maintenance projects - hardened gravel and geotextile over 1 mile of the Trail. This project was completed in 2001.

== Jane Bald ==

Jane Bald (5807') is another Roan Highlands bald. It's name is derived from Jane Cook whose sister Harriet died of milk sickness on the bald in November of 1870.

== Grassy Ridge Side Trail ==

The [[Grassy Ridge]] side trail leads 0.5 miles to the summit. A plaque, located at the summit, is dedicated to Cornelius Rex Peake who owned and donated much of the mountain. The Grassy Ridge summit is a part of the [http://tehcc.org/hiking/challenges/south-beyond-6000/ South Beyond 6000 Challenge].

== Overmountain Victory Trail ==

The [[Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail|Overmountain Victory Trail]] crosses the AT at Yellow Mountain Gap and offers an alternate from Roaring Creek Valley. This is a part of the original 330 mile route used by the Revolutionary War frontiersmen that traveled from Abingdon, VA to Kings Mountain, NC/SC where they defeated the Loyalists. The route officially starts as a walking trail at Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area outside of Roan Mountain, TN and connects to Roaring Creek, NC. OVTA members can be seen walking this route in the Fall in remembrance of the 1780 march.

== Little Hump Mountain and Hump Mountain ==

"The Humps" are quite possibly the greatest balds in the southern Appalachians. At 5587', Hump Mountain stands high above the surrounding hills. It's open meadows can be seen from miles away. One shoulder of Hump Mountain is Houston Ridge where a plaque can be found honoring Stan Murray.

== Doll Flats ==

Primitive camp site on the descent of Hump Mountain before reaching US19E. This is the last point where the Trail touches North Carolina.

== US19E - Roan Mountain, TN and Elk Park, NC ==

== Iron Mountain Gap ==

The Trail crosses TN107/NC226. Recent relocations have moved the Trail away from the Forest Service road that is frequented by backcountry horsemen. There is a small parking area along the road where the Forest Service road meets the highway.

== Weedy Gap ==

Water sources on the east and west sides of the Trail. Apple orchard nearby along the Trail.

== Clyde Smith Shelter ==

[[Shelter:Clyde Smith|Clyde Smith Shelter]] (4400') is a wooden shelter built in 1977 by the United States Forest Service. The shelter resides 200 yards west of the Trail on a blue blaze. Named for Clyde Smith, who is well-known along the Trail for his handmade signs.

== Little Rock Knob ==

Little Rock Knob (4918') is between [[Shelter:Clyde Smith|Clyde Smith Shelter]] and Hughes Gap. Great views to the north from a rock outcropping near the summit along the Trail.

== Hughes Gap ==

First road crossing south of Roan Mountain. Accessible via TN143 and Cove Creek Road from the town of Roan Mountain or from Buladean, NC via NC1330. Overnight parking is not advised here.

== Ash Gap ==

Campsite before steep ascent of Roan Mountain. Water is down short blue blaze trail to the east.

== Roan High Bluff Side Trail ==

Side trail to Roan High Bluff (6267') at the Cloudland Hotel site. Roan High Bluff is a part of the South Beyond 6000 challenge. It is approximately 0.75 miles from the AT to Roan High Bluff. The official summit is a rock outcropping next to the viewing platform. Hikers are not allowed to climb these rocks due to the danger.

== Cloudland Hotel Site ==

After ascending Roan Mountain from Ash & Hughes Gaps, the Trail passes by the site where Cloudland Hotel once stood. The hotel straddled the NC/TN state line and was considered a premier report destination. The wealthy relaxed atop the mountain in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The site is now an open area that has magnificent eastward views of North Carolina.

== Roan High Knob Shelter ==

[[Shelter:Roan High Knob|Roan High Knob Shelter]] (6285') is the highest shelter on the Appalachian Trail. Renovated in 1980 from an old fire warden cabin that was at the base of the Roan High Knob Fire Tower. Foundations of the fire tower can be found in front of the shelter. The USGS marker for Roan High Knob is on a large rock about 30 yards in front of the shelter door. Roan High Knob is a part of the South Beyond 6000 challenge.

== Carvers Gap ==

Carvers Gap (5512') is the primary road access for the Roan Highlands. TN143 comes from Roan Mountain, TN and NC261 comes from Bakersville, NC. Large parking area with restrooms. The road to the top of Roan Mountain is open from appoximately May-October.

== Indian Grave Gap ==

The Trail crosses TN395/NC197 at the state line with FS230 going towards Beauty Spot. There is a small parking area along the north side of the road.

== USFS 230 / Beauty Spot Gap Road ==

USFS road that is accessible from Indian Grave Gap. Road is crossed between Indian Grave Gap and Beauty Spot. The road leads to the base of Beauty Spot and continues around Unaka Mountain to Limestone, TN.

== Beauty Spot ==

One of the many beautiful highland balds in the southern Appalachians. Easily accessed by car via USFS 230.

== Unaka Mountain ==

Originally bald, Unaka Mountain (5180') was badly burned by forest fires in the early 1900s. This resulted in the growth of dense spruce forest on the top that is much like northeastern evergreen forests. Unaka's massif includes Beauty Spot, Rattlesnake Ridge and Stamping Ground Ridge.

== How to get there ==


From I-26 in Tennessee at Exit 46:
#From the Exit 46 Welcome Center follow the access road back under the interstate about 0.2 miles to its end into Clear Branch Road (street sign is often missing).
#If heading east on I-26 and not wishing to stop at the Welcome Center, simply turn right off the Exit 46 ramp and follow the access road a few hundred yards down to Clear Branch Rd. (west-bound traffic will turn left from the exit ramp onto the welcome ctr. access road)
#Turn right onto Clear Branch and head down thru the tiny community of Clear Branch, past the Clear Branch Church, and down the steep grade to the stop sign - about 0.8 mile.
#Turn left onto TN-352 (old US 23 - usually no sign here either) and go about 2.5 miles to Rocky Fork Road on your right.
#Follow RF Rd. about 0.8 mile up to the parking area at the blue gate on your left. The stream along Rocky Fork Road is very scenic, with lots of cascades, deep pools and giant boulders. Great trout fishing too.
#Park in the small area on the right of the short gravel road leading to the gate. Try to leave room for other vehicles if possible.

Alternative routes: Take I-26, Exit 43 (Temple Hill), then right onto Hwy. 352 South to Rocky Fork Rd. on right; or I-26, Exit 50 (Flag Pond) and left onto Higgins Creek Rd. to Flag Pond Rd. (often not signed), then right on Flag Pond Rd. to Rocky Fork Rd. on left

== Carvers Gap ==

== Round Bald ==

Round Bald (5826') is one of the many famous balds of the Roan Highlands. Round Bald has 360 degree views from its summit. == Jane Bald ==

Jane Bald (5807') is another Roan Highlands bald. It's name is derived from Jane Cook whose sister Harriet died of milk sickness on the bald in November of 1870.

== Grassy Ridge Side Trail ==

The [[Grassy Ridge]] side trail leads 0.5 miles to the summit. A plaque, located at the summit, is dedicated to Cornelius Rex Peake who owned and donated much of the mountain. The Grassy Ridge summit is a part of the [http://tehcc.org/hiking/challenges/south-beyond-6000/ South Beyond 6000 Challenge].

== Overmountain Victory Trail ==

The [[Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail|Overmountain Victory Trail]] crosses the AT at Yellow Mountain Gap and offers an alternate from Roaring Creek Valley. This is a part of the original 330 mile route used by the Revolutionary War frontiersmen that traveled from Abingdon, VA to Kings Mountain, NC/SC where they defeated the Loyalists. The route officially starts as a walking trail at Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area outside of Roan Mountain, TN and connects to Roaring Creek, NC. OVTA members can be seen walking this route in the Fall in remembrance of the 1780 march.

== Little Hump Mountain and Hump Mountain ==

"The Humps" are quite possibly the greatest balds in the southern Appalachians. At 5587', Hump Mountain stands high above the surrounding hills. It's open meadows can be seen from miles away. One shoulder of Hump Mountain is Houston Ridge where a plaque can be found honoring Stan Murray.

== Doll Flats ==

Primitive camp site on the descent of Hump Mountain before reaching US19E. This is the last point where the Trail touches North Carolina.

== US19E - Roan Mountain, TN and Elk Park, NC ==

After descending from the Roan Highlands, the Trail reaches US19E (2880'). A few miles west is the town of Roan Mountain, TN where lodging, food and shuttling can be found. To the east is Elk Park, NC where lodging and food can be found. Parking is NOT recommended here.

== Indian Grave Gap ==

The Trail crosses TN395/NC197 at the state line with FS230 going towards Beauty Spot. There is a small parking area along the north side of the road.

== USFS 230 / Beauty Spot Gap Road ==

USFS road that is accessible from Indian Grave Gap. Road is crossed between Indian Grave Gap and Beauty Spot. The road leads to the base of Beauty Spot and continues around Unaka Mountain to Limestone, TN.

== Beauty Spot ==

One of the many beautiful highland balds in the southern Appalachians. Easily accessed by car via USFS 230.

== Unaka Mountain ==

Originally bald, Unaka Mountain (5180') was badly burned by forest fires in the early 1900s. This resulted in the growth of dense spruce forest on the top that is much like northeastern evergreen forests. Unaka's massif includes Beauty Spot, Rattlesnake Ridge and Stamping Ground Ridge.

== Cherry Gap Shelter ==

[[Shelter:Cherry Gap|Cherry Gap Shelter]] (3900') is a concrete-block shelter built in 1962 by the United States Forest Service.

== Iron Mountain Gap ==

The Trail crosses TN107/NC226. Recent relocations have moved the Trail away from the Forest Service road that is frequented by backcountry horsemen. There is a small parking area along the road where the Forest Service road meets the highway.

== Trail Overview ==

Cold Mountain is a 6,030 foot mountain in the northern part of the Shining Rock Wilderness which is part of the larger Pisgah Ranger District. The mountain is quite impressive to look at as it really sticks out from the surrounding landscape. It can be seen from many viewpoints in the area including from downtown Asheville.

The mountain gained national attention in 1997 with the publishing of Charles Frazier’s Civil War era novel “Cold Mountain”. The book was adapted to a big budget Hollywood movie in 2003 giving it further exposure. The movie was filmed in Romania BTW.

The main way most day hikers get to the summit of Cold Mountain is a 10 mile out and back hike from Camp Daniel Boone.

You'll start this hike on the Art Loeb Trail until it reaches Deep Gap. After that you'll take the 1.5 summit spur trail to the top of Cold Mountain. It is uphill the entire way.

The reward of this hike (besides the glory of hiking to the top) is several spectacular 180 degree views into the Shining Rock Wilderness.

*The Art Loeb trail immediately starts climbing steeply with switchbacks and some rocky areas.
*After about a mile the trail reaches the first ridgeline and then the trail becomes more moderate with a slow elevation gain.
*It gets steep again on the final climb into Deep Gap.
*At Deep Gap the summmit trail is a spur off of the main Art Loeb Trail. From here it is about 1.5 miles to the summit.
*The summit trail is steep and rocky but easy to follow.
*Once on the ridgeline there are a large amount of campsites with multiple side trails that can be confusing but they all eventually connect back up.
*Rock outcrops along the ridgeline have spectacular views south over the Shining Rock Wilderness.
*The summit is right on the trail and is marked with a benchmark. Views are here too.
*Weirdly enough, if you stand on the summit rock you'll get full cell phone signal (Straight Talk). Step off the rock and you'll barely get a signal.

== Trail Overview ==

Mount Pisgah (5,722 ft.) is a very famous, easily recognizable landmark around most of western North Carolina especially the downtown Asheville area. Its distinct feature is its large WLOS antenna at the top so it’s very easy to pick out from the surrounding mountains. Its summit has 360 degree views if you don’t mind the antenna blocking some of it. This is one of the most popular hikes on the Blue Ridge Parkway and is usually crowded.

On clear days you can see downtown Asheville and the Biltmore House. Also you get views of the Craggy Mountains and Black Mountains. Cold Mountain and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are also visible.

== Trail Overview ==

Fryingpan Mountain (5,340 ft.) is in the Pisgah Ranger District southwest of Asheville NC. It's noticeable feature is a 70ft fire tower on its summit. It is the tallest fire tower in the entire state of North Carolina.

Get the same and arguably better views as nearby [[Mount Pisgah]] but with a much easier hike and far less crowds. This is a great short family hike but the fire tower itself can be a little intimidating to climb.

The cab of the fire tower is locked but you can take the old metal stairs to just below it and get stunning 360 degree views. There are communication towers on the summit as well but they don't really interfere with the view.

The fire tower has views of the entire Balsam Mountains range. It has a close-up view of famous [[Cold Mountain]] which is just a mere 5 miles north. Looking Glass Rock and [[Mount Pisgah]] are not that far away either. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is visible as well.
