Prior club hike information (in reverse chronological order):

Friday Hikers: Sand Cave and White Rocks, November 27, 2009 Collins Chew reporting We had a glorious, cool day for the 9-mile hike to Sand Cave and White Rocks in Cumberland Gap National Park. There was a dusting of snow on the slopes in Kentucky; the sky was deep blue with a touch of haze. As we have had for several weeks in a row, we had a number of first timers with us. Hikers were: Jud Barry, Kevin Barry (first timer visiting from Nashville), Duer (first timer), Bob Harvey, Phil Hiatt, Jeff Kelleher (last time before returning to California), Joy Moon (first timer on vacation from Chicago), Kim Peters (returning from a long leave of absence), Peter Privon (visiting from Greeneville, SC), Anna Sherrill, and Collins Chew.

Hike Notice, Sand Cave, September 27, 2008 (Note the new date!) Leader: Collins Chew, 423-239-6237 Rating: B/2/B On September 27, we will visit the magnificent rock shelter called Sand Cave in Cumberland Gap National Park. It is not a cave but a huge (4 acre under roof) rock shelter open on one side located on the Kentucky side of Cumberland Mountain. We will also visit White Rocks, a very tall cliff overlooking the last Virginia portion of Daniel Boone's Wilderness Trail and much more. The leaves may be beginning to turn. The hike is 9 miles round trip with a 1,500 foot climb over Cumberland Mountain. The drive is about 60 miles one way to the trailhead near Ewing, Virginia. Bring lunch, water, and appropriate clothing. Meet at 8:00 A. M. in the parking lot between McDonalds and State of Franklin Bank on Ft. Henry Dr. (Tenn. 36) in Colonial Heights, about 1/4 mile north of the I-81 intersection (Exit 59).

Hike Notice: Sand Cave, October 26, 2002 Leader: Collins Chew This hike will be to the spectacular rock overhang of Sand Cave in Cumberland Gap National Park and to the nearby great White Rocks Cliffs above Ewing, Virginia. Leaves should be colorful for us then. For more inspiration and motivation, see the current (Sept/Oct) issue of Blue Ridge Country which features this hike on page 23. We will drive about 65 miles to Ewing to start the hike which will be about 8 miles with about 1600 feet of climbing. Meet between McDonalds and State of Franklin Bank in Colonial Heights on Saturday, October 26, at 8:00 AM. Bring lunch, water, and appropriate clothing. For more info, contact Collins Chew, 423/239-6237.

SAND CAVE HIKE NOTICE: JANUARY 25, 1997 Leader: G. S. Luttrell, Easy. Let's hope for clear, cold weather so we can check out some nice ice formations at Sand Cave; but, no ice and snow on U.S. 58 to Ewing, Virginia. This will be a casual hike, with a target departure at 9 am from Kingsport. You will need to bring lunch, water, warm clothes, raingear (depending on forecast), and don't forget your camera. Since weather could cause a quick change of plans in January, contact me for details. If you get my recorder, leave your name, phone number, number of people in your party, and whether or not you could drive, if needed, for carpooling.
