Trail Comment Formally, there is no Daniel Boone Trail up to Kane Gap outside of a sign at the trailhead and a reference on the Scott County VA Tourism website since it travels on old logging roads across both private and public property. TEHCC Trail Wiki now how a reasonable route which is a steady climb of just under 1,200’ over three miles. It starts at a locked gate on a residential street which is an access road passing a water tower. There are two critical junctions to make good choices to avoid getting lost on Powell Mountain. A new interpretive center is in town, open Friday through Monday (10am- 6pm), to enjoy a short video and exhibits for interesting facts and history about the Wilderness Trail.
Hike Comment The hike started at daybreak to beat summertime heat and afternoon thundershowers (both successfully). Although the region has had some heavy rain, the dirt path was not muddy nor any runoff streams were seen flowing. The forest roads were mostly open thus able to hike at a quick pace. A few sections have tall weeds plus poison ivy and stinging nettles were also encountered. Fall or winter might be better seasons as there are no valley views with the thick leaves on hardwood trees. I picked up very little trash, which was great. I did make an incorrect choice at one intersection to end up above Kane Gap with a bit more mileage. AT&T cell phone service was good all along the hike. The interpretive center is open during the pandemic if wearing a face mask and keeping your space. Overall, this hike would be a good one to walk the dogs.
