Trail
Maintenance: Current Projects
Are you interested in helping a crew with regular AT
maintenance? TEHCC has numerous maintenance teams and
individuals who maintain sections ranging from one mile in
length to 10 or more. Crews go out throughout the year to
remove downed trees, cut weeds and annual growth, paint blazes,
rehabilitate water bars and eroded tread way, and keep our
shelters clean. In addition to maintaining assigned sections,
the TEHCC also has special work events for larger maintenance
projects.
If you are interested in being on a maintenance opportunities
contact list, please contact the
maintenance coordinator.
Roan
Highlands Relocation
The Trail skirted the side of Grassy Ridge heading trail north out of
Carvers Gap before getting to Stan Murray Shelter. The
Trail is being relocated further down the side of Grassy Ridge
to eliminate severe erosion along the current Trail and to
reduce the grade in some steep sections. This new section
of Trail includes many areas of rock work and several new
switchbacks. 1800 feet of this relocation was completed during Hard Core
2008. More relocations in this area will be worked
on by ATC's Konnarock crew in 2008.
Unaka
Mountain Relocation Because
of severe erosion and a steep grade, the Trail south of Iron
Mountain Gap was relocated to go around Little Bald Knob instead
of crossing it. 2000 feet of this project was completed during Hard
Core 2008. More relocations in this area will be worked on
by ATC's Konnarock crew in 2008.
