Hiking

Appalachian Trail
With the most famous hiking trail in the world right in our backyard, it's hard for it not to be the focus of the Club.  The 2,175 mile Trail runs along the Tennessee-North Carolina border until going into the Laurel Fork Gorge and around Watauga Lake before descending into Damascus, VA.  The TEHCC has been hiking the AT since the 1940s and visits it regularly on day trips, overnight trips and maintenance trips.  Click here to discover the Trail through an interactive map or here to learn about the history of the AT.

Local Trails
There are many other trails in the TEHCC's area besides the Appalachian Trail.  The northeast Tennessee, southwest Virginia and western North Carolina areas are a hiker's dream.  Less than 2 hours away is the world famous Great Smoky Mountains National Park with over 900 miles of trails.  Even closer are the Cherokee, Pisgah and Jefferson National Forests and the numerous state and local parks within minutes from the Tri-Cities that offer hundreds of miles of trails.  Click here to find your next hike.Phyllis, Mary Ellen, Kim and Emmett

Milestones
The TEHCC recognizes three milestones: AT2175, SB6000 and S900M.  AT2175 is hiking the entire Appalachian Trail - section or thru.  The 2175 represents the traditional length of the Trail.  SB6000 is summiting all 39 peaks in the southern Appalachians above 6000'.  S900M is hiking all 900 miles of trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
