Basic three-sided concrete block/metal roof shelter with open front and wooden sleeping platform.

Directly on the AT up on Iron Mountain between [[Wilbur Dam Rd to TN91|TN91 and Watauga Dam Road]]. Nearby are views of Watauga Lake, Pond Mountain, and Roan Highlands.

Bring water.  Closest source is 0.5 mile south on blue-blazed side trail.  (South on AT for 300 feet, then turn right on blue-blazed trail, and descend steeply to right on old road track 0.2 mile to saddle. Bear right off road track 0.3 mile into hollow, and reach spring.) If NB, then stock up 1.7 miles south of shelter.

*Sept 2016: Painted and installed graffiti board.
*1992: Shelter painted brown on the outside and tan on the inside.
*1990: New rafters were installed to support a new roof.  Heavy duty corrugated galvanized steel was used for the roof. 
*1961: Built by US Forest Service.
