MOUNT MITCHELL HIKE
3 Sept 94
(Joe DeLoach reporting)
When we gathered early on the morning of September 3 in Colonial Heights, it looked
like it was going to be a nice day. But by the time we got to Mt. Mitchell to meet
Zane and drop off the cars, it was around 40 degrees and just plain miserable!
Undaunted, seven hikers proceeded to the trailhead of the Colbert Ridge Trail for the
climb up to the crest of the Black Mountains and then on to completely as we climbed the
3.5 miles (with a 3000' elevation gain) to Deep Gap. Unfortunately, the clouds never
lifted so we were not able to see from the many outstanding overlooks along the rugged
ridgecrest. This was a difficult trip as billed, with over 5000' of elevation gain
in the course of the 7.5 mile hike. However, even without views it was very
rewarding to reach the summits of Potato Hill (6475'), Cattail Peak (6583'), Balsam Cone
(6611'), Mt. Craig (6647'), and finally Mt. Mitchell (6684'). Wouldn't you know it,
on the way home the clouds began to lift and you could see the peaks with the last bit of
sunshine of the day! The intrepid hikers who conquered these peaks were L. Toof, Z.
Perry (from West Virginia), R. Monderer, M. Fanslow, M. Ekart, E. Dougherty, and J.
DeLoach.
EASTMAN ROAD RACE
16-17 Sept 94
(Steve Perri reporting)
I attended the Eastman Road Race Expo on Friday and Saturday and set up the Hiking
and Canoeing Club display. Our club was one of about 18-20 exhibitors. A
number of people stopped by and asked questions about locations for hikes and picked up
some of our brochures plus new brochures from ATC on Leave-no-Trace Tips. I sent
Becky 3 forms for individuals interested in membership. I think the Club's presence
was a good form of exposure. Other exhibitors however sell a number of items and we
do not have commodities to offer. Our brochure count is still OK for the time being,
but we will need to make some more up soon.
PUBLIC LANDS DAY PROJECT
24 Sept 94
(Steve Perri reporting)
The volunteers from TEHCC worked with several other organizations from the Northeast
Tennessee Region on a project for Public Lands Day. The rehabilitation of Old Forge
Campground was chosen among about 14 others based on need, supplies and donations, and the
size of the volunteer group. In conjunction with Old Forge, Sierra Club and a high
school class removed some metal material from the Big Laurel Branch Wilderness.
The group at Old Forge worked on installing new benches, posts for a fence, and gravel
along walkways. The campground was once an old Forest Service Camp and w ill now be
a campground that is totally accessible (Handicap Accessibility). The work was
conducted with the supervision of Forest Service members from the Cherokee National
Forest. Thus far, the efforts at the campground have been entirely volunteer with
the exception of the Forest Service. Frank, Bob, Ed and Steve are all Hiking Club
Members. Dwight Gergens is a friend of Steve's who had the misfortune of visiting
and was put to work.
1995 TEHCC STEERING COMMITTEE BALLOT
(Steve Perri reporting)
November is when the voting for the 95 Steering Committee begins. Three people
will be elected to serve on the Steering Committee in 1995 and 1996; one of the three will
be Steering Committee Chair in 1996. Please vote for no more than three of the
six nominees listed below and return the ballot to: BECKY BELLAMY, Eastman Chemical
Company, P.O. Box 511, B-89, Kingsport, Tennessee 37662 by 15 December, 1994.
ELECTION BALLOT FOR THE TEHCC
1995-1996
STEERING COMMITTEE
PLEASE VOTE FOR NO MORE THAN THREE:
____ David Allen
____ Brad Dayvolt
____ Garry Lutrell
____ Cris Moorehouse
____ Mike Morrow
____ Steve Wilson
PROPOSED CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT
Proposed Constitution Amendment of TEHCC Constitution, Article
V, Section 2: Holding an elected office and voting is restricted to
employee members of the Club.
The Proposed New Article V, Section 2: Holding an elected office
and voting is restricted to members of the Club.
____ Approve ____ Disapprove
|
Also included is a proposed Constitution Amendment. Currently, retirees are not
empowered to vote on the committee. To amend this article, the proposed amendment
must be endorsed by 10% of the membership and presented to the Steering Committee
Chair, who shall bring it to the Steering Committee meeting. If the committee approves
the amendment by a two-thirds vote, the amendment is presented to the full membership.
To be accepted, the amendment must receive the affirmative vote of at least
four-fifths of all those voting. Article V, Section 2 currently states that
"Holding an elected office and voting is restricted to employee members."
The Amendment would read "Holding an elected office and voting is restricted to
members of the club."
Your participation in the election process and Constitution Amendment is an important
membership responsibility, please give a moment of your time to participate in this
process.
1995 MEMBERSHIP DUES FOR EASTMAN EMPLOYEES
(Steve Perri reporting)
The dues for the Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club Membership will be
increased from $2.00 to $3.00 in 1995 for Eastman employee members. This increase
will help defray a number of increased costs over the last few years including club
purchases of equipment and the postage increase beginning January 1, 1995. The Dues
for non-employee subscription to the Newsletter will remain at $4.00 and $3.00 for Eastman
retirees.
TEHCC BENEFITS
(Steve Perri reporting)
I would like to encourage our club membership to take advantage of all the
opportunities and benefits the club has to offer. Numerous activities are available
including hiking, canoeing, and caving with experienced trip leaders. We
provide hiking and canoeing opportunities locally as well as on other parts of the
Appalachian Trail and other trails. We frequently share our trip experiences by
informal slide shows in the evenings or at lunch hours which is an excellent opportunity
to scope out a vacation option. Our paddlers participate in canoe schools, local
river cleanups and canoe camping trips. For those who are interested in trail
rehabilitation, we maintain 125 miles of the Appalachian Trail and offer many
opportunities to be involved in trail maintenance. We always are in need of hike
leaders and I would encourage anyone who would be interested in leading a hike to contact
Steve Wilson our Events Coordinator. We will be putting together the 6 month
schedule in a few weeks for 1995, so please volunteer. For more information or to
volunteer to lead a hike contact Steve Wilson at 615-239-0456.
