SOUTHERN MULTI-CLUB MEET
(Scheduled for 4-6 September 1993)

Leader: Joe DeLoach (615.753.7903)
Rating: FUN
Although the deadline for registering for lodging at the Southern Multi-Club Meet was August 15, participation in this event is still open and encouraged!  Along with some great hikes in the Smokies and the chance to get to know people with similar interests, there will be a meeting where members of the various Appalachian Trail-maintaining clubs get to report on events along their section of the Trail.  This will take place on Sunday evening at 7:00.  With our opening of the Pond Mountain relocation and the record-setting amount of maintenance hours we have this year, this presentation should be very enjoyable.  The meet will be held at the Wesley Woods Camp in Townsend, near Cades Cove.  For more information or directions please call Joe DeLoach.

HIKER'S CHOICE
(Scheduled for 11 September 1993)

Leader: Frank Williams (615.245.8414)
Rating: Easy
This will be an easy hike selected by the participants.  Come with lunch, water, comfortable walking shoes and dressed for the weather.  Meet at the Colonial Heights Burger King (park between Burger King and McDonalds) at 8:45 AM for a 9 AM departure.

MOONLIGHT HIKE TO GRASSY RIDGE
(Scheduled for Friday, 24 September 1993)
(NOTE DATE CHANGE FROM 6-MONTH SCHEDULE)
Leader: Gether Irick (615.477.8207)
Rating: Easy
This Easy/Fun hike will depart from the parking lot between the Burger King and McDonalds in Colonial Heights at 6:30 PM.  We'll drive to the parking lot on Roan Mountain and hike the ca 1.5 miles to Grassy Ridge; this is one of the most spectacular balds/viewing sites on the entire southern Appalachian Trail.  After viewing an awesome (depending on the weather) moonrise, we'll hike back to the cars by moonlight.   While the hike is rated Easy, there is some climbing involved, but nothing too strenuous for the average couch potato.  Bring a flashlight, junk food (or dinner), blanket, and very warm (winter) clothing; it gets very cool in the evenings above 6000-ft in September.  While pre registration is not required, someone in your group should call Gether Irick prior to the hike - it will be canceled if the weather does not cooperate.

A.T. DAY HIKES, GETTYSBURG, PA. AREA,
(Scheduled for 1-4 October 1993)
Leader: Kevin Edgar (615.246.9464)
Rating: Moderate
This will be a series of hikes covering about 65 miles of A.T. in 4 days, in a scenic and historic part of the country. We will drive up, and stay in motels or campgrounds in the evenings.  The hikes will be long but, for long hikes, will be on the moderate difficulty side because the elevation change is moderate.  We will cover the stretch from U.S. 11 to the Maryland border.  Those who may wish to come along and do part of the distance, combined with sightseeing, will be accommodated as much as possible.   Call Kevin Edgar at 246.9464 (229.4396 after 20 Sept) to pre register (a must) or for more info.

FOR THE RECORD

A.T. COMPLETION
(Don Baker reporting)
Don Baker completed the A.T. on 29 July 93 at highway 341 at Kent, Connecticut.  Steve Banks and I had a good five days to do about 95 miles.  The weather was hot and humid with fire danger high from NY55 to NY20 because of a previous fire.  Happy and somewhat down that all the pushing for miles is over.  Just thought I would let you know about it.

(Congratulations to Don for completing the A.T.! - editor)

CAMPING RENTAL EQUIPMENT COORDINATOR
(Joe DeLoach reporting)
We are looking for someone to take over the responsibility of handling the Club's Camping Rental Equipment program.  Ted Malone has been overseeing this program for the last several years, as well as being our Appalachian Trail Maintenance Coordinator which is one of the most important and time-consuming jobs that we have.  Ted has done an excellent job in both positions, but with the growth in our Trail maintenance efforts we need a new person to run the equipment rental program.  This person needs to be a current Eastman employee.  If you are interested in taking this position or want to learn more about what's involved, please call Ted Malone (615.477.2222).

From time to time opportunities to serve as an officer of the Club arise.  If you are interested in serving the Club in such a position, please call Joe DeLoach (615.753.7903).  We welcome your interest and support!

ROAN HIGH KNOB FAMILY BACKPACK
(July 23-24)
(Collins Chew reporting)
Roan High Knob was a great place to escape the heat for the weekend.  We carried water which was good since the spring was dry.  The children had a great time cooking (burning) hot dogs and marshmallows, exploring the top of the mountain, making a video to reenact the Civil War, etc.  The two other backpackers moved upstairs in the cabin after we arrived and there was plenty of room.  Those attending were: Mike, Matthew, and David Pearce, Jud, Sam, and Emily Barry, Chris, George, and Peter Privon and Collins Chew.

AFTER WORK CLUB MAINTENANCE TRIP
(Wednesday, 4 August 1993)
(Ted Malone reporting)
We continued to work our way through the rock hillside toward the second switchback.   The rock is brittle but takes time to chip out.  We have about 90% of the rock out of the way now.  Next Wednesday we will continue to work on sidehill and put some railroad tie steps in at the cemetery road.  This will be our last Wednesday trip before the dedication and picnic on Saturday the 14th.  Hiking Club members are urged to come out and help prior to the dedication and picnic (this is a Konnarock day).   RSVP for the picnic so we will know how much food to rustle up.  Expect the usual hamburgers, hot dogs, watermelon, along with some Tex-Mex baked beans and other surprises.  Frank Williams, Steve Perri, Cris Moorehouse, Richard Siggins, Joe DeLoach, Ed Oliver, Ted Malone participated.
